Russell Martin has been fired as head coach Southampton after the team’s disappointing start First league the season that ended with A 5-0 Sunday’s defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
The 38-year-old leaves the club at the bottom and is already nine points from safety after scoring five points in 16 games.
“We can confirm that we have made the difficult decision to part ways with our men’s first team manager, Russell Martin.” statement read.
“Going into the season, we all knew the challenges we would face this year as we adapt to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.
“But the reality of our situation is clear. The board has been supportive of Russell and his employees and has been open and transparent about our expectations. We all unanimously recognized the urgency of improving results.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months. Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season. especially winning the play-off final in May.”
Martin was appointed head coach in June 2023 and led the club to promotion to the Premier League following a 1-0 victory over Leeds United in May in the Championship play-off final.
However, he hinted at the pressure he was under after the defeat to Spurs, in which Southampton were 3-0 down after 14 minutes.
“I didn’t recognize our team in the first half,” Martin said. “But I’m glad they survived the second half. “At this point, it’s about pride and showing care for each other.”
Martin led Southampton to promotion last season, playing in an eye-catching style that won him acclaim.
However, his refusal to deviate from his tactics made his team too easy to beat in the top flight.
When asked at the end about the booing, he replied: “[The fans] they were amazing in the second half. Really good.
“As a person [the boos don’t hurt]. Because I understand that this is not a personal matter. But as a manager, yes. It hurts me and the team. But I understand it too.”
