Spotted: Cobra mini driver

The mini driver craze in professional golf seems to be continuing. TaylorMade (the group’s elder statesman), Callaway, Titleist and PXG all have mini models that have appeared in pros’ bags. In many cases, fine pickups have also hit the market, with consumers eager to add the traditional alternative to fairway woods to their sets.

This week in The American Express, GolfWRX spotted a new addition to the mini market: Cobra’s “The Deuce.” Some people like to refer to a mini pickup as a “two-wood” pickup, and we even saw double-wood markings on clubs many years ago. Cobra isn’t giving us any details about this new Mini, so we have no idea about the size or whether it has a chance of making it to retail.

We can speculate on a few things though, the first being that we see Cobra’s FutreFit33 hose adjuster and a QR code on the club. This means there has to be at least a chance of it making it to retail, otherwise they wouldn’t bother including a code just for gig players. The sole appears to be entirely titanium with two movable weights at the front and rear. They should provide the ability to select launch and rotation by moving the heavy weight forward or backward. This system has proven successful on most woods and it appears that the heavier 12g weight is offset for lower spin and launch.

The carbon fiber crown is part of the design and looks very similar to the new DS-Adapt wood that Cobra just released. The Duece has a very traditional shape and only one positioning aid made with the Cobra logo. This crown allows Cobra engineers to move the saved weight elsewhere in the head to optimize the center of gravity. The face doesn’t seem very deep and the club overall doesn’t feel like the biggest mini driver on the market. The only thing I don’t see on the face is that it may be a prototype, but it doesn’t have the HOT Face marking like in retail stores. While Cobra does not currently display the King logo on drivers or fairways, this club does have the designation. I’m not sure what this means, but we noticed another detail.
