Disappointed, Dirk van Duijvenbode left the stage after losing 3-1 in sets to Madars Razma in the second round of the World Darts Championship. Thus, for the second year in a row, the tournament for “Aubergenius” ends before Christmas.
In the tournaments leading up to the World Darts Championship, Van Duijvenbode showed good form, reaching the quarter-finals of the European Darts Championships and even reaching the semi-finals at the Players’ Championship finals. However, in the week before the match, he came down with severe flu. “When you get sick, it doesn’t matter anymore,” he said of the Viaplay camera. “You’re doing everything you can, but I’ve been sick all week.”

Nevertheless, the start was promising for Van Duijvenbode. He won the first set 3-0 and led 2-0 in the second. But then the Dutchman lost six legs in a row. “I suddenly lost consciousness,” Van Duijvenbode lamented with tears in his eyes. “My energy was so low that at the beginning I decided to give it my all. 3-0, 3-1, that’s what I was counting on, because I didn’t have enough energy for five sets.”
“I can’t even throw an 18-dart anymore. I can only blame myself for that,” continued Van Duijvenbode, who did not want to use his condition as an excuse. “Do it yourself. Rightly. If you act even a little bit normal, you will win easily.”
