WITH the Winmau World Masters (PDC) revamped for 2025, it may be time to take a look at the ‘Darts Calendar’ in general. The season has been “bottom-heavy” for a long time, and many of the most important events take place over several weeks in autumn and winter.
The last quarter of the year includes three “Big Five” events and two “mini majors”. Additionally, WDF has repositioned its flagship to avoid a clash with Ally Pally, marking another landmark event for November/December.
It seems that the Player Championship finals essentially need to remain at the same level as the culmination of the Pro Tour season, and the same probably applies to the European Championships.
The Grand Slam could probably move, but it also has an element that requires certain other events to be completed in order for the field to be filled as the PDC wishes. Although there may be a bit of juggling involved.
The obvious restructuring would be to move the World Grand Prix to the end of June and the unranked World Cup to the end of August. The qualifiers awarded would have to be shortened – or changed to rolling just for this event – ​​but WGP has always been different, and that was intentional.
This would mean that the top 5 companies in the ranking will be in March, June, July, October/November and December/January. The mini-specialties would also be more spread out, spanning February, September and December. The two largest annual Premier events will then conclude in May and August.
Surely this could make the season more reasonable for players, fans and friends alike?
