Find the sweet spot every time with this 3-club drill

Many amateur golfers make the fatal mistake of overswinging in order to generate more distance. But longer swings actually work against you because they reduce control and result in off-center shots that kill your power.

Fortunately, mastering the swing is easier than you think. All you need to do is slow down and focus on the pace.

75 percent turn

I always say: Tempo is not determined by how fast you swing, but by how fast you swing. A great way to develop a powerful and controlled swing is to shoot at around 75% power.

It may seem counterintuitive, but reducing swing force improves shot efficiency and produces more effective center shots, which means more ball speed and distance.

My 3k tempo workout

For this exercise, it is best to start with a target 100 meters away. Then take the club from your bag that you normally hit at that distance, as well as two more clubs with a lower elevation. For example, if you usually hit a 100-yard wedge, grab it and your 9-iron and 8-iron.

Now imagine greenery around your target. Your goal is to make as many shots as possible on this “green” square. You’ll get 10 tries with each cue, hitting the highest option first. As you track your progress, pay attention to ball flight and distance control for each club.

Once you’re done, add up the total. You may be surprised to find that you were more consistent with lower elevation clubs. This is because unlike the highest lift options, these clubs required changing with less effort, which in turn smoothed out your pace.

You can use this drill from any distance. Try it with long irons or even woods to bring some rhythm back to your game.
