Later tonight, in 2025 PDC World Darts Championships finally begins at Alexandra Palace in London. For 96 of the best darters in the world, it’s time to perform. Every year, one name comes from the pack who made a surprisingly deep start and who became an ex-pro turned expert Matthew Edgar he thinks he knows who this man might be this year.
“There is value everywhere (for potential players). But one thing I would say is to stay away from the top half of the draw. The reason is that you have two Lukes (ed. Humphries and Littler) and you have really hard-hitting players who are in good form,” analyzes Edgar, himself a three-time PDC World Darts Championship competitor, for OLBG. “So if you’re looking for value, look at the bottom half.”

After scanning the bottom half of the draw on his own, Edgar selected a potential dark horse. “I actually have a really surprising draw and I think the draw could really open up for this player,” he explains tantalizingly. “He’s a player who has been on the professional scene for a long time and has never really had a crowning moment. He reached the World Cup final and had a strong run at the UK Open a few years ago. “
So who is this mysterious man? “I wouldn’t be surprised to see that William O’Connor run here,” Edgar finally discovers. “Completely out of left field, you would think, 500-1, surely not? However, I think William O’Connor could open up for a draw. And if he plays the way I know he can, he could be something valuable.
O’Connor will face Dylan Slevin in the opening round at Alexandra Palace on the evening of Friday, December 20.
