Keane Barry sees opening after glut of new winners

In a particularly high-profile first round match, Keane Barry won 3:1 Kim Huybrechts on a Sunday evening in 2025 PDC World Darts Championships. After securing victory in a high-quality match attended by 17,180, Barry will now face the tenth-seeded former world champion Gerwyn’s price in the second round.

Barry, who had only won two matches in the previous five World Darts Championships, lost the first set to Huybrechts but then managed to emerge victorious thanks to, among other things, three finishes over 100 points and a double percentage of 50%. “Dynamite” averaged 94.97 compared to his opponent’s 96.92.

“It’s a great feeling. I’m really happy with this performance,” reflected a delighted Barry in his press conference after the match. “I’ve struggled in the past at the World Championship stage, especially in doubles, but tonight I felt really good. I feel confident in my game and I hope I can keep playing like this because I know I can do even better.

Barry may also draw inspiration from the recent spat over surprising major finalists. Although the Irishman is a former UK Open semi-finalist, a potentially deep run at Alexandra Palace could finally allow him to realize his enormous potential. “There is no one who really dominates anymore,” he notes. “I always believe in myself, I always believe that in every tournament I take part in I will win and I want to win. If you don’t have self-confidence, there’s no point in showing up.”
