At least briefly over the weekend in the US, TikTok no longer existed. This includes GOLF’s own TikTok account (which you will find here). While people have mixed feelings about the ban, one popular professional not only supports it, but thinks it doesn’t go far enough.
Last week, the US Supreme Court refused to end a bipartisan law banning TikTok in the US. On Saturday, January 18 the ban came into forceand TikTok suddenly became unavailable to users in the US
The ban is controversial, with supporters saying it poses a threat to national security and users furious over the loss of their favorite app.
Subsequently, future President Donald Trump announced that he would decide to delay the ban. On Sunday, TikTok responded to X, stating as much they started restoring the service.
But just before TikTok was banned (and then unbanned), the LPGA star Charley Hull she addressed her army of Instagram followers. After the ban was passed, she suggested that society should now go “old school”, “ban all social media” and return to the use of non-smart cell phones.
“TikTok is banned. Honestly, I think we should all go back to old school,” Hull wrote. “Ban all social media back to your Nokia phone and live in the moment.”
But why does Hull think it would be better if all social media was banned?
“I will guarantee that the whole world will be a happier and healthier place,” Hull said at the end of the story.
For the record, Hull’s number of followers on Instagram stands at an impressive 712,000. Her fame has grown significantly in recent years, thanks in large part to viral moments on social media.
Most golf fans remember a viral storm caused by Hull’s cigarette smoking habit on the road.
Golf as a whole has a mixed relationship with social media and the smartphones that people use to access it. Augusta National still does not allow cell phone use on-site during graduate school week. The same applies to many private clubs.
However, recreational golfers are increasingly relying on mobile phones, for example to measure distance. And the golf social media sphere is growing exponentially.
The PGA Tour now includes mobile phones and social media. A sea of phones records every important moment of the tournament, and fans later flood the social media feed with photos and videos.
Additionally, new-look golf leagues such as TGL and LIV Golf have placed an emphasis on social media marketing and relationships. Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau he just became the newest golf star on YouTube.
