The level of sub-top darts has increased significantly in recent years, but contrary to what might be expected, the number of averages over 100 at the World Darts Championships has actually declined.
Statistics Darts platform Orakel has reviewed with over 100 averages per year at the World Darts Championship. In the first two editions of the World Cup (1994 and 1995) no averages exceeded 100 points, this was achieved for the first time in the 1996 edition.
Thereafter, at least one 100+ medium was produced up to and including the 2007 release. This failed in 2008, and a year later ten were suddenly thrown out. A new record was achieved at the 2010 World Darts Championships, where average scores were fifteen people over 100.
A new record was broken in 2015 – the 19th edition of the Darts World Championships in 2017 went down in the history books. No less than 26,100+ mediums were rolled this year. It was also the edition in which Michael van Gerwen broke the magic barrier in all six matches. In the semi-final, Van Gerwen even recorded a moyenne of 114.05, which is still the highest average in the history of the Darts World Championships.
In 2018, the record was almost broken. In the year that Rob Cross unexpectedly became world champion, the score finished at 25,100+ averages. This number was not reached in subsequent years, with the low being 11,100+ averages at the 2020 World Darts Championships. During the last edition of the World Dart Championships, 22 100+ averages were scored.
Breaking the record from 2017 is only a matter of time, especially since next year the group of participants will increase to 128 players. This also means more matches at the World Darts Championships and therefore more attempts to average 100+.
