Liverpool’s decision not to do much business in the summer transfer window was questioned at the time, but it has proven to be a wise move.
Arne Slott’s side are in superb form as they top both the Premier League and Champions League as they target a record 20th English top-flight title.
But Anfield’s transfer committee still have some work to do, preferably before the January transfer window closes, just to provide more certainty for the future and cement their title credentials.
Get these new contracts sorted
An obvious starting point, and one that the media hasn’t shut up about all season long— four four two Included – but for obvious reasons.
The best news Liverpool can offer this month will be new contracts for Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk is reportedly the player closest to an agreement, while Ballon d’Or winner Salah has repeatedly said this season would be his last at the club. Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold has been criticized amid rumors he is obsessed with a move to Real Madrid.
In particular, reaching a new contract with Salah will be a major boost for Liverpool. The winger has been absolutely brilliant this season, leading both the Premier League’s goalscoring and assist charts, and reaching double figures in both statistics.
Searching for new left-back to compete with Andy Robertson
Despite their excellent form, there has been a fairly obvious weak link in their squad throughout the season that ideally needs reinforcements.
Andy Robertson has been an extremely reliable player for Liverpool since joining in 2017 and is still ranked eighth on FourFourTwo’s list of the world’s best left-backs, but his performances this season have been far from his usual standards.
The left-back has missed several goals this season and is yet to register a Premier League assist in 2024/25. Kostas Tsimikas has never looked like a decent backup option, and while Robertson can still play a role, signing a new player who can provide better competition could solve a glaring problem in Liverpool’s squad.
Fulham’s Anthony Robinson was touted as a potential replacement last month (well before that, in fact), but Bournemouth’s Milos Kolquez has since emerged as a potential replacement.
…that’s it
Apart from the question of whether they want to sell and replace Alexander-Arnold to secure a transfer fee, it all looks simple enough for Liverpool.
We really can’t rule out the possibility of fringe players leaving if Liverpool receive a sizable bid, but it seems likely they’ll be set to leave after reports emerged that they’ve turned down an eight-figure bid from Ipswich Town for youngster Ben Doak. There is no rush to do so.
Of course, as they’ve found in their contract disputes so far, saying it’s simple isn’t the same as saying it’s easy…
