Tyson Nash was known as “the pest” for six years in NHL Game in St. Louis Blues and Phoenix Coyotes, and that’s a title he accepted.
Nash, now broadcasting for the Utah Hockey Club after more than a decade as a Color analyst for Color COYOTES, was a guest on this week’s episode The turtleneck is lower and touched on a wide variety of topics, from golf, hockey, and his new gig.
But he told his co-hosts Colt Knost AND Drew Stoltz His “pest” reputation was born from nearly 10 seasons of minor league hockey.
“I did 30,000 Canadians [dollars] Living in Syracuse, New York, Nash said. “I work at Pizza Hut in the off-season, right? Delivering pizzas to pay for training and getting paid like I’m a professional, I’m supposed to be a professional.
“And I rode that bus. He beats me every night, you know, you keep fighting, you keep grinding like you’re in the NHL, but you’re not making money.”

So when an NHL coach approached him and told him they didn’t need a player with his offensive skills, he was willing to do whatever it took.
“I think we had five Hall of Famers on our team at St. Louis,” Nash said. So he says, “I just want you to be a rat. I want you to be the most hated player in the entire league. If you can do it, you have a job here as long as you do it.
“Otherwise you’ll be back on the bus eating soggy underwater substances and drinking beers. And I was ready. And literally for four or five years he was the most hated man on earth. “
Nash said he clashed with his personality, he didn’t like being mean off the ice. But on the ice, he had a target on his back.
“It was so hard because I wasn’t that hard, but everyone wanted to kill me,” he said. “And that was hard because I was afraid of the death of every friking game. I was like, oh my God, who’s going to kill tonight? “
