Sergio Garcia has filled a void in his Fireballs GC lineup with a promising young Spaniard who competed in last year’s US Amateur.
That player would be Luis Masaveu.
Masaveu, a 22-year-old from Madrid, reached the semifinals in Hazeltine before losing to compatriot Josele Ballester, an Arizona State senior who later won the Havemeyer Trophy.
Masaveu’s amateur resume included victory at the 2024 Portuguese International Amateur and minor amateur honors at the 2022 and 2024 Spanish Opens on the DP World Tour. After reaching No. 16 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Masaveu turned professional last October and was set to receive full Challenge Tour status on the Global Amateur Pathway rankings. In his professional debut at the Asian Tour International Series in Qatar, he finished ninth.
Masaveu replaces Eugenio Chacarra in a Fireballs squad that includes Garcia, Abraham Ancer and David Puig, the latter of whom was Masaveu’s former Spanish national team teammate.
“Obviously this is his first year as a professional where he’s coming in and playing with a lot of potential,” Garcia told LIV Golf’s Mike McAllister. “I think it will be a good learning experience. But all three of us, not just me but Abraham and David, will be there to support him, cheer him on and make sure he enjoys his game and plays to the best of his ability.”
Said Masaveu of Garcia joining the team: “I’ve watched him since I was a kid, winning the Masters and the Ryder Cup. So this is just amazing. I’m just very, very happy to be here and I’ll try to learn as much as I can with him.”
Masaveu’s signing with the Fireballs leaves one spot open on the LIV squad for the season that starts next month. However, multiple media outlets have reported that Tom McKibbin will soon sign with Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII.
