Ally Pally success can “kind of turn the whole season around” says Matt Campbell after exciting win over Mensur Suljovic

Matt Campbell organized the game in the second round with Ryan Searle in 2025 PDC World Darts Championships. Back and forth, see-saw fight with Mensur Suljovic on Thursday night at Ally Pally, the Canadian number one ultimately won 3-2.

Campbell and Suljovic played a particularly exciting match at the iconic Alexandra Palace. Campbell took 1-0 and 2-1 leads (Campbell averaged over 120 per set 3rd ed.) in sets, but both times saw Suljovic come back and win the deciding fifth set. Ultimately, Campbell controlled his nerves and won 3-2.

“It’s worth reflecting on how I shot. I have a W and that’s all that matters.” Campbell gave a blunt assessment of his performance on the Ally Pally stage while talking to the media after the match. “I feel like it was a really bad year, but luckily I managed to qualify, come here and win my match in the first round. It kind of turns the whole season around.”

But Campbell doesn’t want to cite frequent trips back and forth between Canada and Europe as an excuse for this down year. “I’m used to it, but next year it will be more difficult because of the tight schedule,” he says. “They’ve added more Players’ Championships and even more across Europe, so it might be harder next year if I qualify. But if I don’t qualify, it will be quite easy!”

As mentioned, in the second round, Campbell will now face “Heavy Metal” Ryan Searle on Sunday afternoon at Ally Pally. “I hope he averages 67!” Campbell smiles. “But no, I expect a good match at a good pace. We’ll just get on with it and whoever wins, wins.”
