“I thought I gave a good performance. Probably not the best, but pretty close,” Owen said in his post-match press conference. “Niels played well, but I thought I actually had that little better advantage at the end.”
As already mentioned, Owen also secured victory in style, smashing 121 for a double 14. “That’s my favorite outshot! If I hit that triple 11, I can close my eyes… there’s a double 14 coming,” he said. he says with a smile before turning his attention to the next round and Gabriel Clemens. “I’ve beaten Gabriel before, I’ve beaten a lot of top players. And now it’s not about self-confidence, because I’ve always been confident and believed in my own game, but I’m starting to show it on stage, I’m starting to show what I mean, what I’m made of.
In the second round, Robert Owen will face Gabriel Clemens
While this is his first victory on the big stage, it is not his first visit to Alexandra Palace. In 2023, Owen lost to Andrew Gilding 3-2 in the first round and the Welshman does not have the best memories as he recalls the insults he received from the audience.
“It wasn’t really bad memories, to be honest, I played in front of the crowd because they made me sad, you know what I mean, and a lot of people didn’t hear what was said, and I won’t repeat it – that’s what they said, but I took it upon myself the obligation to respond on social media,” recalls the Welshman. “When I last played, some things were terrible. Honestly, I was made fun of. But hey, I’m thick-skinned. I don’t care what people think.”
