January 22 – The lure of English football from across the pond is as strong as ever, and Hollywood continues to be the destination for investors to find. Marvel director, Joe Russo is the latest to try his luck at Sheffield’s Steel City, as he joins Championship side Sheffield United.
Russo (pictured left), who can boast directing the second-highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame, is no stranger to English football as he is friends with Wrexham’s own Hollywood royalty in the form of Ryan Reynolds (pictured centre). The two were pictured together in April 2023 when the Red Dragons beat Boreham Wood to win promotion to the English Football League.
“We are delighted to welcome Joe, Len and Terry to the board of directors of Sheffield United Football Club,” co-chairmen Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltwicki told the official Blades website.
“We want to see the Blades compete in the top flight of English football consistently, not just on a one-off basis. A key component of this is ensuring we have the highest quality team not just on the pitch but in the boardroom as well.
“Joe, Len, and Terry each bring outstanding capabilities and decades of experience to the table as we plan long-term, develop the brand and ensure we have the best infrastructure.”
Just last month, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Abdullah bin Mossad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud sold the club to COH Sports, an American-based consortium.
Chris Wilder’s side are currently second in the EFL Championship after losing the ‘Yorkshire derby’ to nearest rivals Leeds United last weekend.
In a statement, the new consortium said the new owners fully supported Wilder and club CEO Stephen Bettis and were confident of providing the right framework for the club’s development.
