Plymouth’s problems went from bad to worse as Wayne Rooney’s side scored four first-half goals at Coventry.
The Pilgrims, winless in their last eight, are bottom of the Championship and were destined to stay there given their nightmare first half at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Coventry, managed by Rooney’s former England team-mate Frank Lampard, went ahead after five minutes through Tatsuhiro Sakumoto.
Efron Mason-Clark scored between two Josh Eccles goals to put Lampard’s men firmly in the driving seat.
And some fans in attendance caused Rooney further grief by chanting about his future position as Plymouth manager.
“What on earth has Frank Lampard done with Efron Mason-Clark?” TalkSPORT’s Geoff Peters said reporting from the game after the third goal.

“Lampard has been fantastic since he arrived at the CBS Arena and I’m sure there were some cries this morning about Rooney being sent off.”
And after Eccles went 4-0 up at Coventry, Peters said: “‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’, they sing to Wayne Rooney. It’s Lampard’s Coventry 4-0 Plymouth.”
Rooney was appointed Plymouth boss in May after the West Country side narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship last season.
But Plymouth remain bottom of the table with just four wins from their 21 league outings.
Lampard was appointed Sky Blues head coach in November and is having a better time than Rooney.
Since Lampard was appointed, Coventry have won two and lost two of their five games before kick-off on Boxing Day.
