Julen Lopetegui West Ham co-owner David Sullivan in talks with January target, but insists he will not let him distract from Thursday’s visit Southampton.

West Ham want a striker when the window opens, but they will have to sell before bringing in someone to meet spending regulations.

‘I’m not going to tell you the discussions I’ve had with David, but we talk a lot about the team, the squad and the next challenge — but right now our only focus is Southampton,’ said manager Lopetegui.

‘There is no more space in my mind now, only this. I believe the only truth is to focus on the next match. Let’s see what happens next.’

Winger Mohamed Qudus has attracted interest, but West Ham will consider selling him for a huge fee with a release clause in his contract worth around £85million due to being active in the summer.

His performance was a 1-1 draw Brighton Last Saturday, both on and off the ball showed how important he still can be the hammer.

“Any offensive player is much better if he focuses on his defensive work,” added Lopetegui. ‘Football is always focused and a team game.

‘It’s a pity he was out for five games and it’s not easy to get back into the rhythm in the Premier League.

‘He’s doing it and we’re happy for him. He is doing well and helping the team.’
