The Indian women’s squash team entered the quarter-finals of the WSF Squash World Team Championships after defeating Australia 2-1 in Hong Kong, China.
Anahat Singh defeated Jessica Walt 11-9, 11-6 and 11-8 in her match to take the lead in the tie. Nirupama Dubey, ranked 206th in the world, lost 11-8, 8-11, 9-11 and 9-11 to Sarah Cardwell to equalize the draw at 1-1.
Akanksha Salunkhe then led her team to the final eight after defeating Alex Haydon 11-8, 11-5 and 11-6 in the final match.
The last time the women’s team reached this stage was in 2012, when the tournament was held in Nimes, France.
Later in the day, the men’s team will face Malaysia for a place in the last eight.
The coaches of the men’s and women’s teams respectively are former Asian Games medalists and national champions Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu and Joshana Chinappa.
