Peter Wright as a former world champion, he is proud of his Scottish roots, but was largely raised in England from an early age.
In an interview with Oche, he talked about his early life and how his mother ran away from home with him when he was just three years old when he left Scotland and moved to England.
Apart from the fact that he had a difficult upbringing and that, despite living in England most of his life, his heart still bleeds blue and white.
“My mom was 16 when she had me and my dad was in prison. But her sisters didn’t think she was ready to raise me at some point and apparently they were talking about getting me off her,” an emotional Wright said while discussing the story with Oche.
“So my mother decided one night that she would just run away to London with me when I was just three years old.
“It was obviously a very difficult time for her, but that’s the only reason I left Scotland.
“We were in London until I was 18 and then I lived in lots of places – Suffolk, Norfolk, Cheshire, Ayrshire.
“I’ve probably played for more counties in darts than any other player – I’ve represented every place I’ve lived.
“I’m living in Suffolk now and my mum lives with us above my wife’s hairdressing salon. But my heart still remains in Scotland.
“My true identity is that I am Scottish – I have Scottish blood in my veins.
“I am passionate about my upbringing. I was taken from Scotland just so my mother could keep me.
“I’m delighted to be able to tell my story now and I hope people will understand that I am a true Scot. I hate it when people say I’m not. I am proud of my country and even more proud to represent it.”
