Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged the Gunners hierarchy to back Mikel Arteta in the January transfer window following the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

“You’ve got a midfielder playing at right-back. It didn’t really solve the problem for us and I think we’ve won one of six games when Thomas Partey played there and it did a lot for us It’s a vulnerable position.
“Unfortunately for me again, I would say I think the manager needs a lot of help from the board now. I don’t think he can do more with what he has, otherwise if you have the choice you can’t continue on the right Use Thomas Partey at the back and he needs options, attacking and defending.
“We were so close to the risk of it failing.
“In the next couple of games, if that doesn’t happen, if they don’t send someone in to give them a boost, because you can see they look a little bit tired.
“I think they looked very tired mentally and physically and I can’t emphasize enough how much we need help right now and we need players.”

Asked if Arsenal had any chance of challenging Liverpool for the Premier League title if they don’t strengthen in January, Wright replied: “The way we’re playing, with the players we have, no. Chances are, look on the bench.
“Our left-back Miles Lewis-Skelly has done an incredible job and I have to mention the players brought in during the summer transfer window. [Mikel] Merino wool and [Riccardo] Calafiore, unfortunately Calafiore got injured, Merino… In a season where we really need people to hit the ground running, that’s not happening for him.
“Miles Lewis-Skelly is a young player who has arrived and proven he can play the position, so we can use the money in some way, we’ve been in need of a striker for a few years.
“I’m sure Arsenal fans will be thinking about these things. But these are things we have to think about now because if we have any chance of playing this game something has to happen in the last few weeks of the transfer window because he has With a player like that at the moment and the injuries he’s got, it can’t happen, the way Liverpool play, the way they carry out things, it’s not possible.”
