Young collector pulls rare Paul Skenes card — here's what the Pirates are offering for it

An 11-year-old collector from Los Angeles has nabbed a one-of-a-kind baseball card featuring the National League Rookie of the Year Paweł Skenes.

Topps announced Tuesday that the card it is featured on Pittsburgh Pirates The pitcher’s autograph and a patch on a game-worn jersey were found.

Now comes the fun part: finding out how much it’s worth on the open market.

A collector can get a huge sum if he wants to sell it to the Pirates, who in exchange for the card have put together a package that includes 30 years of season tickets to home plate at PNC Park. In addition to season tickets, the Pirates’ offer also includes a softball game for 30 people at PNC Park, two T-shirts autographed by Paul Skenes, and a meeting and great fun with a star pitcher.

Skenes’ girlfriend, LSU gymnast and influencer Livvy Dunne, offers the cardholder the opportunity to play with her in a luxury on-field suite during one of Skenes’ starts.

This card could have quite a lot of value elsewhere considering the potentially bright future ahead for the 22-year-old Skenes, who also finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting after a stellar rookie season in 2024.

The first overall pick in the 2023 amateur draft made his major league debut in May and had one of the most impressive rookie seasons in history. Skenes was selected as the NL All-Star starting pitcher after just 11 starts and finished the season with an 11-3 record with a 1.96 ERA in 23 games.

Skenes said over the weekend that he hadn’t thought about the potential of signing a long-term contract to stay in Pittsburgh, instead stating that his focus was on helping the Pirates take a step toward contention in 2025.
